Sermon on the Mount

I find that art invites me into a deeper meditation of scripture. These illustrations are based on one of my favorite biblical passages: the sermon on the mount. You can read the full text here.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”

Jesus announces the reversal of worldly values and instills a kingdom where those who, like him, lay down their lives will also be exalted.

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

There's a light living within us that has the power to make this world a brighter place. Let us not be selfish in keeping it to ourselves.

From-the-inside-out.jpg

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them”

Following Jesus isn’t about a set of rules. It’s about letting God’s love transform our motives and desires. Only then can his love overflow from us like springs of living water.

Prayer.jpg

“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven”

It is only when we die to self that our prayers can flourish. Let’s choose God-dependency over self-sufficiency.

Kingdom-mindset.jpg

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well”

When we focus on things above our anxiety dims in the splendor of his power and majesty. By trusting that God is perfectly good and always faithful, obedience becomes a joy.

Firm-foundation.jpg

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock”

God’s word stands forever and His Word became flesh. Our faith is not built on institutions but on the person of Jesus.
